Michael Karl McNeil: Ranks Held, Firefighter to Battalion Chief
I am Michael Karl McNeil. These are the ranks and positions I held across twenty-five years of fire service, in the order I held them, each with the document that shows it.

Fire cadet, 1989
Where my service begins.
Reserve Fire Inspector, 1995
A fire protection district selected me after an oral interview and notified me by letter on 26 June 1995.
Fire prevention volunteer, 1997
Seven months in a city fire department’s prevention office: research for inspections and plan checks, and inspections and tests of fire prevention equipment. The Fire Chief’s letter is dated 18 December 1997.
Volunteer firefighter
Two Fire Captains of a city department recommended me for active membership in their volunteer firefighter association and called me one of their top responders. A city issued me certificates “For Outstanding Volunteer Service” on 6 May 2000 and 6 June 2002.
Firefighter and crew leader
With a state fire agency my classification was FF/CL, and in May 2000 I was assigned as an Initial Attack Incident Commander. A county Fire Captain’s letter of 8 June 2002 describes me as “a Certified Firefighter and Crew Leader” and as the Company Training Officer of the volunteer fire company. The same letter records that I had “nearly completed the requirements to become a Volunteer Fire Apparatus Engineer, qualified to drive and operate an ICS type I fire engine.”
Fire Prevention Captain
Federal fire. Several of my training certificates from those years are made out to “Michael K McNeil, Fire Captain.”
Fire Battalion Chief, Prevention
Federal fire, and my final rank. I was promoted to it from Fire Prevention Captain. The Marine Corps certificate I received on 16 June 2008 is addressed to “Fire Prevention Battalion Chief Mike McNeil.”
I am a former Fire Battalion Chief. That is the phrase I use, here and everywhere else.
